WISE




Founded in 1921, the Department of Economics at Xiamen University obtained national prestige during the chairmanship of Professor WANG Yanan, a former president of the University, who translated Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations and Karl Marx's Das Kapital into Chinese. The Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in Economics (WISE) was founded in 2005, with the aim of maintaining XMUs leading edge in economic research in China, and becoming an internationally recognized center for teaching, and research.

WISE has the following specific goals:

  • To publish research in top international and domestic academic journals;

  • To enhance the curriculum design in all areas of economics and finance;

  • To train young economists of academic leadership quality for China;

  • To play an active role in policy making for central and local governments;

  • To become a center for international academic exchange in economics and finance, particularly in south China and the Asian-Pacific region



WISE operates under the leadership of an international advisory board formed by renowned scholars. These include the Honorable Dean, Professor Luolin Wang, a distinguished Chinese economist, Professor Gregory Chow, Emeritus Professor from Princeton University, Professor Jerry A. Hausman, the 1985 John Bates Clark Award winner from MIT, Professor Cheng Hsiao from the University of Southern California, and Professor Lawrence Klein, 1980 Nobel Laureate from the University of Pennsylvania.

So far, WISE has about 40 full-time faculty members who received their PhD degrees from renowned oversea universities, and 5 distinguished adjunct professors from North American universities who visit and teach at WISE regularly each year. Within WISE are nine academic research centers. These are the Research Centers in Econometrics, Finance, Macroeconomics, Political Economy, and Statistics, as well as the China Research Center for Labor Economics and Social Insurance, the SAS Center for Excellence in Econometrics, the Cornell-XMU Cooperation Center, and the XMU-SMU Research Center for Chinese Capital Markets.

WISE actively encourages its faculty members to publish their research in top international and domestic journals. The results so far are encouraging. WISE faculty (include both full time and part-time members) have published extensively in prestigious English speaking journals. These include Biometrika, Econometric Reviews, Econometrica, Econometrics Letter, Economic Theory, Econometric Theory, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Mathematical Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series B), Mathematical Finance, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Review of Economics and Statistics, Review of Financial Studies. In addition, WISE faculty has published in top Chinese periodicals, such as Journal of Economic Research (Jingji Yanjiu) and China Economic Quarterly (Jingjixue Jikan) and China Journal of Economics (Jingji Xuebao). According to the Tilburg University Worldwide Economic Schools Research ranking, WISE associated with the School of Economics is ranked among the top 20 in Asia and ranked 4th in China in the number of publications in selected prestigious international journals in recent years.
