Economic Building


School of Economics is the largest college in Xiamen University, with eight teaching and research units, i.e., Department of Economics, Department of Planning and Statistics, Department of Public Finance, Department of Finance, and Department of International Economics and Business, as well as Institute of Economics, Center for Macroeconomic Research, and Center for China Energy Economics Research. Moreover, Teaching & Laboratory Center was also set up in this School. There are 175 fulltime teachers, among whom 55 are professors (46 of them are Ph.D. Supervisors) and 59 associate professors. Currently the School has a population of 4,699 students, among whom 258 are Ph.D. students, 1,227 master degree candidates, 3,214 undergraduate students and 24 postdoctoral research personnel.

School of Economics is also the strongest college in Xiamen University. The Economics disciplines of Xiamen University always rank among the top five among those of universities in the mainland of China. The School also shows its academic strength in such fields as Public Finance, Statistics, Finance, Mathematical Economics, Insurance, Labor Economics, World Economics, Regional Economics, Quantitative Economics, International Trade and Industrial Economics. In 2007, approved by the Ministry of Education, Theoretical Economics and Applied Economics in School of Economics of Xiamen University were assessed as Class A state key disciplines. Now in the School, there are five Class B state key disciplines, i.e. Public Finance, Statistics, Finance, Political Economy and World Economy, each with great influence in the circle of economics; one State Basic Talent Training Base of Economics; one Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education; one Demonstration Center for State Experimental teaching; two doctoral degree conferring sites of Class A Discipline in Applied Economics and Theoretical Economics; and two doctoral mobile stations. There are 12 programs at B.A. level, 25 at M.A. level and 25 at PhD. level.

School of Economics possesses excellent conditions for teaching and scientific research. In the School, there is a branch library with more than 200 thousand volumes of books and magazines on economics and management. The School's Teaching Laboratory is equipped with advanced computer network facilities and its Modern Economics Laboratory is the first one ever established in the mainland of China.

A strong academic atmosphere prevails over School of Economics and academic exchanges are held extensively. Each year sees various high-level international and domestic academic seminars held by the School and series lectures offered by economists from home and abroad. At the same time, the School has actively opened up and developed foreign academic exchange and cooperation, and has successively established formal or informal intercollegiate coordination relationship with universities from such countries and regions as Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia, Singapore as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
